Well, that would have been a decision no one should have walked into thinking Apple was going to support them forever. That Intel was THE WAY was clearly apparent long before then...Intel-based iMacs were starting to crowd those systems in performance, and it was more like three years ago...the Mac Pro came out 8/06. Anyone needing a top end machine like that, then, has probably moved on to the even toppier-end Mac Pros which make the G5's look like a Dalmatian iMac in comparison. :-) I know, I know, it hurts, but this is the Way of the Computer.
