1. If I were you, I would get all my music onto the external hdd, then re-import your songs into iTunes, making sure before you copy, the checkbox 'copy files to iTunes music folder' is unticked in the advanced panel of iTunes preferences.
2. OR, move your iTunes folder from your music folder on osx onto your external hdd, and in the preferences of iTunes, advanced panel, choose the folder you stored the iTunes folder in on the external hdd.
