My G5 single 1.8GHz did the same thing. All hardware monitors gave no indication of excessive heat. Sometimes the revving fans wouldn't stop and could be heard four rooms away. I grew to distrust leaving the G5 on when I wasn't near it, and ended up selling it to someone who knows of the problem.
