Subject: Re: Apple G4 CPU upgrade options
Does nayone have any experience between these two:
1. Mercury Extreme G4/1.2GHz w/2MB L3 Cache. (I'm not sure the correct
model#)
2. sonnet encore st g4 1200/2m (SG4-1200-2M)
macuser, I thank you for your time.
But you see I got this G4 Powermac as a hand me down.
The two processors I mentioned on my last link were mentioned for a
reason,
and that is because they are old processors and they can be found
anywhere from $60-100. I need another 512mb stick and I will have
1.5gigs of ram,
and I already run 2 firewire 400 drives (320gigx2)
You can't compare the savings I'm after,
to the theoretical savings you spelled out.

I had a Mercury Extreme 1.5GHz in my old Sawtooth, and had absolutely no
problems. I ran a Sonnet G4 upgrade in my old Beige G3 and that too, was OK -
but there were one or two issues regarding booting from CD/DVD (i.e. CMD+C
didn't work) but I think those issues were specific to the G3 & ZIF upgrades.
