Thanks Kris for the response (and to all others), First, the combo Update for 10.5.8 requires 10.5.7 to be installed (according to the Apple info. on the web). So, 10.5.7 then to 10.5.8 - no matter, the system did not withstand the update anyway (I downloaded it as a combo update, not a live install from Software update). In the end, manipulation of the International preference Panel did not work - I had to go and trash the system configuration preference in the System folder; not a good sign. I believe this situation has other issues, and I'll post a separate thread for dialogue. Thank you all again. Dana
