The combo drive itself will work in a clamshell. However, you will  
have to transfer the clamshell bezel to the new drive. I've even  
stuffed a CD drive from a trayloading iMac into a clamshell, after  
modifying the bare faceplate to fit in the opening. It's a bit of a  
stretch to find the eject button, but it works just fine. So the  
biggest problems you are going to have are a) getting the old drive  
out and b) swapping faceplates. The latter is the most critical  
because of the need to use the manual eject button.
