The minimum OS for "Classic" is OS 9.1. Normally, you'd use OS 9.2.2  
for "Classic". You don't mention the model of Mac, but models that  
can't boot OS 9.x directly are "Classic only", meaning they run OS 9.x  
as emulation while booted under OS X. If you need to boot OS 9 you may  
need to reformat your HD IF you failed to add the OS 9 drivers when it  
was formatted. If your "Syst. 9" install disc isn't at least 9.1 it  
won't work as Classic. You can download a free version of 9.2.2 that's  
an OS X installer package here:

Remove the two "netboot" extensions from the System folder>Extensions  
folder before using.

If you use your installer disc to install from, and it's not 9.2.2,  
you can download the update to 9.2.2 for free here:

disc regarding Classic.
