I would add that on many Macs (from the LC series through to G3 and G4 series) I've seen this behaviour shown when the PRAM battery is dead - most recently on our old G4 QS at work. Our IT guys (all Windows people) told the user it had a dead MoBo! I bought in a new 3.6v halfAA and bingo:- a fully functioning QS. Now they refer all Mac problems to me - or they will do, if any arise.
