You might also consider upgrading with the special firmware that enables G4 CPUs to work in the B&W, I don't think there are any downsides, it will still boot and install with a G3 CPU, but if you later decide to upgrade to a G4 you won't need to upgrade again. I don't think so, it originally shipped with 8.5.1, an normally the shipping OS is the earliest that will boot.
