You might also consider upgrading with the special firmware that  
enables G4 CPUs to work in the B&W, I don't think there are any  
downsides, it will still boot and install with a G3 CPU, but if you  
later decide to upgrade to a G4 you won't need to upgrade again.

I don't think so, it originally shipped with 8.5.1, an normally the  
shipping OS is the earliest that will boot. If the HD has 8.1 and it's  
booting, that could be "the problem" that requires updating?
