I have replaced a couple of optical drives in MDDs too but all I did for one of
them was to round off the top corners of the bezel, not remove it.
Seeing as there are so many variations of drives and their bezels that fit and
work in MDDs, I think it just comes down to the particular model you are
installing.
Some go straight in without mods , some don't.
It also depends if you are installing these into the bottom tray as a second
optical device or as a replacement for the existing drive in the top tray.
The replacement Pioneer drive in my top tray slotted straight in without
hacking but the Panasonic that went into my lower level had the top corners
rounded.
