I recall reading somewhere about some Acrobat bugs that cause such
things - not only embedding fonts unnecessarily but embedding
multiple copies or some such. You should google around for this.
(using the same Acrobat 8 application that resides on one of the partitions)
This could be an issue. Adobe "products" are not self-contained in a
single .app package. The installers plop pieces all over. So when
you run the .app from a different system, it's not reaching all its
pieces properly, especially those in /Library/Application Support/
and /Library/Fonts/. Try installing Acrobat on EACH system.
