I just got a G3 imac 333Mhz. 288Mb loaded with software for $5.00. Run's great but no software to get on the web, up's my best op.

You're going to have a poor browsing experience in OS 9 most likely, but WaMCom 1.3.1 was the latest and most up-to-date of the free browsers, it's based upon Mozilla, the same a Firefox. It's nearly 7-years-old now. I believe iCab is slightly more modern, but costs $ to use, so it's not a free browser.
It's free, just after 30 says it pops up a little note each time on startup :)

In OS X, you need Safari, Firefox, Opera, or any of the lesser used browsers. Safari is probably your best bet since it's Apple supported for OS X.

Then install OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and
you'll be near the proverbial "end of the road" for this old iMac. OS X will run fine on 512MB, but will be a little cramped on 288MB.
Also, the video chipset provides no 3D rendering or hardware acceleration on OSX due to Apple stupidity (the chipset in the Beige G3's has the same problem, and the floppy drive doesn't work.. at least on 2/3 models of the beige G3s you can put a PCI card in...)

Anyway, this is a very good first Mac, its wherer i started for the little bit increased price of $35, but it was worth it :)
