There's an impedance issue here. Preamps made for turntables have a very specific resistance and capacitance across the output that is specified by the RIAA to give a flat frequency response. CD or other line inputs lack this termination, and will give you some odd sounds. You'll be better off keeping the TCC and adjusting the volume. If both controls work, try to keep the eMac's input in the middle of its range, and then adjust the TCC until you get a good sound.
