Nearly all my drives - both internal and two mounted in a couple of FW cases - are Pioneer brand - 115s and 118s, mostly because they seem to need fewer patches or firmware updates to work straight out of the box for Macs. The biggest error most people seem to make in my opinion is that they select too higher a burn speed or the drive doesn't have enough buffer underun protection.
It also depends on what machine you are running these off too.
A faster machine can keep the data up to the burner more than fast enough to prevent problems when recording. Throttle your burn speed back to something like 8X and I bet you have more success.

I'll try the 8 speed,. Whenj I use Toast I usually choose the "Best" tab but I sure don't know what that means. I got real desperate recently and chose 2 and still no cigar on that DVD, But I think I had some crap media. I got a new batch of Phillips Lightscribe and these have so far been OK. The CDs and SLs are usually OK the DL movies are a real PITA. DL data disks are pretty easy. I wish I could hit on the magic combination. I get tired having to watch the DVDs on a set top to be sure they play OK. They almost always play right on the Mac, Any info on a LaCie? or are they in name only?
