I'm not sure I understand. If the cable you have is a DVI-D cable, then by all means use it directly from the DVI port on the Mini to the DVI port on the monitor without the VGA adapter at the monitor.

If the cable is a VGA cable, and you have a DVI-to-VGA at the Mini, then you're stuck unless you buy a DVI cable, which should give a slightly crisper image on the monitor, as well as different sets of resolution/refresh rates.
