Probably one instance for each widget you've got loaded in Dashboard? You can click on the Dashboard icon and then the "+" sign and then close off any widgets and this will likely stop each instance. You can also kill off Dashboard completely if you want using some Terminal commands, which is what I've done because I never use widgets, and they seem to eat up a lot of resources.
