Sleep is problematic in my experience. If you need to save power, have it hibernate instead. Hibernate is like a complete shutdown, no power being used, but the "reboot" is fast, and all your apps and windows are exactly like you left them. The only minor problem might be a lost Airport connection, which may also read wrong in the Airport menu item. You'd turn Airport off & on again to reestablish connection.

There are a couple 3rd-party preference panes for selecting between Hibernate only; Sleep then Hibernate; Sleep only; or Never Sleep or Hibernate.
