>> AFAIK, DVD-5s are "regular" DVD: "5" is short for 4.7GB, while "DVD-9" >> should be Double Layer DVDs (much more expensive), holding approx. >> 8.5 GB.
The original architectural specification was 5.0 GB and 9.0 GB total usable capacity. Along the way, additional error checking codes were added for reliability. The media capacity was not extended, however. This addition, therefore, reduced the usable capacity from 5 GB to 4.7 GB and from 9 GB to 8.5 GB. They are still called DVD-5 and DVD-9, however. Most drives made in the last 5 or so years have had DVD-5 and DVD-9 capability for read and write, and for both - and + media. The one feature which full-featured drives have had, but which has been deleted for reduction in cost, has been DVD-RAM compatibility, sometimes deleting just the write function, sometimes deleting both the write and read functions. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
