My un-educated internet research revealed that three identical sticks ran faster than two, and four sticks ran inbetween two & three stick speeds. Don't remember the url of the test unfortunately.
A Google search for "triple channel ram" returns over 1,000,000 results that seem to say that there is such a thing as triple channel memory, I believe that is what is indicated by the DDR3 designation.
