USB 3.0 is supposed to be a replacement for Firewire, hence many new mobos have USB 3.0 but not Firewire. But, USB 3.0 is more than just a faster serial port, it is also a high power port. The USB 3.0 connector LOOKS the same as a standard sized USB 2.0 connector, but it has four additional pins which are carefully hidden, and the power goes over those additional pins. Hence, USB 3.0 PCI-e 1x cards all have a Molex hard drive type power connector for sending power out the USB 3.0 connector (attachment of a USB 2.0/1.1 device bypasses these power pins). For those of us who are into Hackintoshes, the NEC/Renesas-based card is the way to go, for maximum compatibility. Etron-based cards are OK, too, but on a card-to-card basis there is little difference in cost, so definitely go with NEC/Renesas. On a mobo-to-mobo basis, an Etron-based solution is a significant savings, but it is probably false economy as the available driver was designed for the NEC/Renesas chip and not necessarily the Etron chip. ASMedia and other USB 3.0 chips do not have MacOS X drivers for them, so these only work on Windows. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
