When a drive goes to sleep, the volume icons DO NOT "drop off the screen".

If the volume icons went away without you intentionally dismounting them, then you have some sort of failure occurring.

Ayup. A failure. Check your system.log for errors, to determine the exact fault.

Make sure the cables are properly connected, then try doing a Repair Disk with Disk Utility.
