I've just been playing with my dual 1.GHz MDD, currently with 512
memory (until I find my stock pile!). I want to set this up with a
drive booting OS9 natively, and also to be able to use Classic in OSX
Tiger.
I partitioned an 80GB drive as 60/20, with a view to installing OS9
on one and Tiger on the other. I installed Tiger on the second
partition successfully, and did the updates. I then put my OS9.1 cd
in, and this loads, but clicking on either 'install' button tells me I
already have OS 9.1 installed, and to update it to 9.2. It then tells
me that the version of QuickTime is out of date and then says that
Classic cannot update files in "system Folder" on "Mac OS 9.1" because
the disk is read only,
Trying to install an app that requires "Classic", on the Tiger
partition tells me that "Classic" is NOT installed.
So then I thought I'd try and install OS9 on a separate hard drive.
Using the OS9 cd does not give me this option though from Tiger, and
putting a Leopard drive in there also will not let me install OS9 onto
the separate drive!

So then I thought I'd try booting from cd with just the empty drive
in......but after the "bong" I get nothing and nothing on the display
either. I'm using Apple Display monitor on ADC connector, and I also
plugged in a VGA monitor thru an adapter to the DVI connector but
still no video, (just in case I was for some reason not getting video
on the ADC monitor but ....)
So then I firewired my original iPod which has a copy of Tiger on it.
This started up the MDD. I then copied the system folder from the CD
onto the empty hard drive. In 'System Preferences' going to 'Startup
disk' shows OS9 as a boot option.
However selecting this as startup disc does not (as I really expected)
boot OS9!
As I've currently got the Leopard disc in there I can't check whether
"Classic" will launch from the OS9 "system folder" but I suspect not.

If I were to CCC the drive from my PDQ onto the "empty" drive in a
firewire external box (since I have a PCMCIA FW card for the PDQ)
would that then boot the MDD perhaps?
The OS9 disc is a retail version AFAIK. I also tried my iMac DV OS9
disc, out of curiosity (desperation!?) - that again tells me I have
OS9 installed....when I tried from Tiger....
....am I missing something obvious here?

Dan.
