Certain USB cards were notorious for causing sleep issues.

The system network settings are stored in the /library/preferences folder on 
your hard drove (not the one in your home directory). The name and location 
within that folder changes slightly based on the OS version, but finding that 
.plist file and dragging it to the desktop, then rebooting will give you a 
'clean slate' network setting. IF your system is currently set to get it's IP 
address and such from the router it should get all the necessary stuff 
automatically.
