Needless to say, a tick box for ignoring NM would be highly beneficial to some people like myself. With network manager installed (for the sake of argument let's say it needs to be installed.) If it's installed but you don't/can't use it, gaim won't connect, it waits for NM to show there being an active connection... this is really troublesome. It looks to me as though your problem is NM not installed, or partially installed, so it looks for it more than just the dbus tag and turns up the same as it finding it but with no connection reported resulting in you not being able to connect normally, of course for me with NM installed, I can't connect at all.
