Summary: Issue with the new NEtwork Manager Functionality

Initial Comment:
Now that gaim tries to use NM by default it proves a problem when you have a
distro which installs NM by default (Ubuntu Feisty) but you can't use NM
(incompatible dialup) This meaning I must uninstall nm, thus removing the
metapackage for all main desktop debs (meta for new standard packages), which
is bothersome. Needless to say, a tick box for ignoring NM would be highly
beneficial to some people like myself. And it just makes sense.

But that's not remotely what the problem is, if you have to have NM
installed, and Gaim is compiled by your distro with dbus, and NM doesn't
happen to work with you, or you don't want to use it. Gaim is crippled
making the user do annoying things to connect. the NM support should be a
choice after compilation was well as compile-time.

All i can say is that it helps to compile gaim with ./configure
--disable-dbus

I solved my problem with updating NM to version 0.6.4

0.6.3 and maybe below don't seem to work (i think these versions have
bugs)

Well, that is along the same lines but mine more is to it performing just
as it's supposed to, which causes the problem. With network manager
installed (for the sake of argument let's say it needs to be installed.)
If it's installed but you don't/can't use it, gaim won't connect, it waits
for NM to show there being an active connection... this is really
troublesome. It looks to me as though your problem is NM not installed, or
partially installed, so it looks for it more than just the dbus tag and
turns up the same as it finding it but with no connection reported
resulting in you not being able to connect normally, of course for me with
NM installed, I can't connect at all. I was going to report it to Ubuntu
Feisy Launchpad (Bug Boards) first but realized it's more of an upstream
thing.

I can confirm that this is a problem, cause if i start gaim 2.0beta6 i get
this errors:

Session Management: ICE initialized.
Session Management: Connecting with no previous ID
Session Management: Handling new ICE connection... done.
Session Management: Connected to manager (GnomeSM) with client ID
117f000101000117024881600000045670014
Session Management: Using gaim as command
network: NetworkManager not active or reports no connection (retval = 2)
dbus: Need to register an object with the dbus subsystem.
g_log: file dbus-server.c: line 118 (gaim_dbus_pointer_to_id): should not
be reached
network: NetworkManager not active or reports no connection (retval = 2)
account: Network not connected; skipping reconnect
Session Management: Received first save_yourself
Session Management: Received save_complete
docklet: embedded
network: Entering nm_callback_func!

So gaim does not connect on startup, i have to disable the accounts and
enable them again to get loged in.

I use Ubuntu Edgy
