Hi,

Unfortunately I have this error/bug too (not sure if this is a bug or a
lack of feature). I mostly use GAIM for the Yahoo! and GTalk/Jabber
protocols, and beeing hungarian most of my buddies are too hungarians, so
when they put a status message which contains hungarian characters they get
screwed up in GAIM and I need to use my cryptographic skills to figure out
what their status message is.

I don't know if this is a Yahoo! protocol problem or a GAIM one, but
certainly drives me nuts. I hope a solution for this can be found, because
I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe it would be nice if
all the status messages on all protocols would use the utf8 encoding, so
nobody gets "fancy" (means unreadable) characters.

I have a feeling that this is a GAIM problem because all hungarian
characters (those with accents) show up as two exotic characters in GAIM,
so it must be some multi byte encoding used in the status message encoding,
and in GAIM a non-multi byte encoding which results in displaying a single
multi byte encoded character as two non-multi byte encoded characters.
Maybe I'm wrong, but these are my findings so far.

Good work has been done on GAIM so far, it's now becoming more and more
better with every release. I'm using 2.0b6 on Ubuntu Edgy.

Hello! Thank you for great messager!
Let improve it :)
Yes, with problem with icq. My encoding settings is "Windows-1251"
(Windows, Russian).
I've tried to set "ISO-8859-5", unfortunately result was the same :(
