Sorry you are right: that is confusing and I am taliking about the svn download. When you extracted the tarball you put it in a directory as in "It does not matter where you place the extracted directory: it is easiest to leave it as a sub-directory in the Downloads directory." Delete that directory (rather do it from your file manager as the terminal command rm can be quite unforgiving (understatement)) and start again by extracting the tarball (by dble clicking the tar.bz2 file). You don'have to download the tarball again
