Hi Thomas,
So by walking by the microphone you probably got several steps of different 
volumes!
The way I record my walking is to tie a string to the digital recorder and 
hold it in front of my feet about a foot off the ground.
This way all the steps are of the same volume and I don't have to worry 
about stepping on the recorder.
