Hi lindsay.
The best way to avoid filch is not to run too quickly, since you can always
hear him coming and he's pretty slow. He also can't catch you if your on a
broom, so if you find the nimbus 2000 broom you can use thatto fly over his
head and indeed have to in order to complete the first stage of Sarah,
though you equally can't pick up objects and move pretty quickly on a broom.
beware the grue!
