One of the more powerful techniques available to mages is the 'charge spell' approach. The spells 'burning hands' and 'shocking grasp' can do a tremendous amount of damage when they hit, and you can cast them both on yourself before starting battle. You can also cast them on certain minions, like the clay man. Against the blobs, one or two charge spells should kill them outright.
You do have to give up an item to use the spells, but it's totally worth it. Make sure you keep your weapon, and give up your shield or held item. Also, make sure to use the 'check' command to look over your character and see if you've missed any of the more important skills and spells.
