Hi,
As I didn't receive any response, I suppose the message didn't arrive as
expected. In case this happened, or someone else is interested in
debugging the emulator's code, here goes the link, again.

I changed some of the text in modifications, reflecting the changes I'm
planning.
Thanks,
Sukil

Yes, I have noticed the first character stripping as well. That is something I
have no idea how to fix. It happens with real hardware synthesizers too, and
not only the BNS. It worked on the Windows 3.1 VM, though.
Can you put the code up somewhere? I can try to check it out and debug it.

Hi,
I think there's something else, because I've just implemented a timeout function if the
program is called using the "--habla" switch. However, onlythe commands issued
by me (and those ending with a cr) are spoken, not those sent by habla. If I send text
through a terminal program, the emulator speaks it correctly (it didn't do this before).
And, in addition, habla seems to strip off the first character sent to it. This is really
strange. If anyone is interested, I can send him / her the code.

Sukil

Hello,
In dosbox.conf, there is a line that sets up COM8 on the host computer to be
COM1 on the virtual DOS machine. This means that, while traffic is going
through COM8 on your host machine, the virtual machine in dosbox thinksthat it
has a COM1 port. it doesn’t know about the ports on your host system unless you
let it know yourself.
About Habla, there is one problem which pretty much prevents you from using it
altogether. The Braille ’n Speak version of Habla relies onthe interactive
timeout function in the actual notetaker. What that optionbasically does is, if
it receives a byte from the serial port ,it keeps itopen for a specified amount
of time. If it receives a carriage return character then it will speak the
string it has in it’s queue. If it doesn’t, though, it will wait until the time
expires, and then output everything that has been sent to it, no matter if it
has a cr in it or not.The strings that Habla sends are not terminated by a
carriage return. Withan actual Braille ’n Speak, you can set your interactive
timeout, and it will speak the strings after a few milliseconds. It feels a lot
moresluggish than ASAP, but it works. The problem is that the BNS emulator does
not have a timeout function and thus, until it receives a carriage return, it
will sit there doing nothing while Habla sends it text.
I have confirmed this issue because my redirect thing makes it do the exact
same thing, since I haven’t implemented a timeout yet, and also because it
works with an actual BNS, and even a Ciberveu 232P.
So for now, I would recommend using ASAP if you don’t want to dig around the
source of the emulator more. I may look into adding a timeoutinto my
redirection tool, and then Habla should work.

Hi,
I'm trying to use DosBox with a Spanish screen reader called Abla. This reader,
like ASAP, connects to a bns.
Here is the issue: as it didn't talk, I looked at ASAP.bat for some help, and
saw that ASAP connects using COM1. So why does the bns emulator use COM8? How
does it connect if COM1 is not configured? And can anybody helpme in getting
Habla to speak? Thanks!

Sukil
