Hi. You earn lives back at a rate of one per twenty minutes. As for the sword, have you tried using your shield to protect yourself, to get an idea of when to swing? You can also use it to bash opponents' weapons aside, letting you get a couple hits in. Not every enemy will let you hit them as they shout or strike.
