As I understand it he has ten Manamon in total, the last being near level thirty. I believe a few people have ground to be able to beat him but it's my understanding the story proceeds the same regardless. But then that's often how it is even in mainstream games when you have a boss you're expected to lose to for story purposes. Having progressed beyond that part I can say that it seems the shadow master is a task for much further into the game, however, I'm also curious. Suppose that you were to painstakingly to level up you party and succeed in defeating his fourth manamon, rather than getting captured and having to complete the tunnels part, is that even possible, and would the story then take another branch?
