It might actually help if there was a specific "offline tryout mode" which
set the player on map one with an average zombie count and item drops just
to get used to the game.
Perhaps someone could even write a couple of tutorial quests into that too.
I do really enjoy swamp and indeed need to set it up and try again myself
now that I have a decent usb mouse, albeit setting up my new windows 10
machine comes first.

No. Because of the amount of hackers and cheaters in the game,
the only way to play the online mode is to purchase a gamer
account.
You can play offline if you wish, and some of the campaigns can
give you a good feel for the game, but there is no way to access
multiplayer without an account.
