Hi Anne, You could try several things. First sometimes the game does lock up especially if the game level has not fully loaded. When the game is in main menu mode, I put Sarah inside a wall and that may be where you are. After hearing Sarah announce the floor you should be able to walk forward with up arrow. If you hit up arrow and do not here her walking then try the letter I which is the same command. Also on some versions JFW will intercept arrow keys and not pass them through to the game so unloading JFW improves your walking ability.
Lastly if you have picked up a broom and hit enter on it you are in mid air and should not hear walking sounds. It is harder to tell that you are traveling in this way. If you hit control plus w and the coordinates are changing than you are moving. hope these suggestions help.
