the combat is turn based, but upgrade your phaser banks and see if you can get some lazer banks installed. these do less damage but they are more accurate at long range. also buy missiles the bigger ships can carry torpedoes and these can be photon and quantum. also upgrade your engines as you have a better chance to flee if you need to. also keep looking at your enemies shields if they are higher than yours flee if yours are dangerously low.
