Well if you're not averse to such methods, you might try unequipping your weapon before you examine that statue, then re-equip it right before you click Begin Combat. This has the effect of confusing the game, for lack of a better term. It'l adjust the knight or whatever enemy to fight you unarmed and so the fight will be a lot easier with your weapon. I do that all the time because I hate that quest. I mean I like the quest itself but I hate having to fight those knights seven times each, and this methood will save you a lot of time, not to mention Runes of Life. Those guys are tough no matter how high your melee rating is.
