Hi Cara,
I agree. One reason I have been into the Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider
style of treasure hunting games is getting to know the myths, legends,
and history of an ancient culture being discussed. That is one thing
Montezuma's Return was lacking.
In Montezuma's Return there were plenty of skulls, snakes, and spiders,
but nothing that specifically tied in to the myths or legends of the
Aztecs. As many people on this list have pointed out there were also no
official bosses or special creatures that you had to fight at the end of
the game.
In Mysteries of the Aztecs I fully intend to try and pull in some of the
myths and legends specific to the Aztecs. I've been doing some reading
up on Aztec beliefs, and they are interesting as always. Like all
cultures their oral and written histories are full of heroes and
villens. Some of the villens have a sci-fi type nature to them.
For example, one of the common villens, Nahual, is a powerful evil witch
with the power of transformation. Like most villen characters past and
present Nahual tends to take the form of something her enemy fears.
Another female villen goddess, Cihuacoatl, is described as a skull faced
old woman armed with a spear and shield. She belongs to the Aztecs
collection of death gods and goddesses. In particular she is said to be
the death goddess responcible for the death of children and young warriors.
As you might guess either or both of these villen figures, terrifying as
they sound, would make great bosses. Not sure how Angela' is to defeat
such villens, but when I delve deeper into the legends behind them
perhaps the answer will be in the tales.
