At this stage I got as far as the beginning of level3. I lost no lives previously, so I should have 4 lives, 3 lives at the start of the game and one life picked up. Ok that is strange, I have not had that particular problem, although yes the timing is critical and if you are too fast or too slow on walking and jumping they will definitely get you.
