Hi Chess Players, as well as want to be chess players: The American Printing House for the Blind's Fred's Head Companion blog has an entry about playing chess. It includes descriptions of the game, mentions adapted chess sets, and has links to the USBCA web site. The blog is at http://www.fredshead.info/.
The Printing House is the place to go for accessible educational materials.
