Hi,
Yep, money-making can be a little annoying at first. I never went in for the resource gathering bit myself. There is an article by Michael Feir in Audyssey Issue 36 I think, which gives some advice for early game strategy. There is a spot near Or'gn which you'll eventually learn of if you talk to peasants or warriors which will help teach you knife throwing, a very useful ranged attack early on. You can use it when you're challenged and it might give you a bit of an advantage. Yes, the game is tedious at points, and the map is huge, but it's worth the struggle I think. Just takes some initial grappling.
Enjoy,
Zack.

Hi zac.

At the moment I'm just trying to get a sufficient amount of money to actually buy better weapons so that I stand a chance against warriors and can go to more interesting places. At the moment every time I've tried fighting someone I've got my rear end soundly handed to me, ---- even on the one occasion i met a guy who like me was just carrying a knife.

I'm trying to get money by selling wood, but it's not the most interesting process in the world especially given the slightly clunky item handling commands, and the rather heavy game emphasis on inventory management and carrying capacity.

while eating and drinking in a game is fair enough, ---- and the time element is potentially interesting, constantly having to stuff things into sacks or my backpack and take them out is proving not to be too much fun.

of course, I've probably just been spoiled by all the fun litle dodges that systems like inform use to handle these sorts of things. Even Eamon delux got some pretty heavy overhawling by it's creator to make command entering quicker, ---- eg, auto complete, enter to repeat commands etc.

But I'll persist with fallthrough sinse the sense of wandering a huge map is rather nice and I'm certain that ----- Original Message ----- From: "Zachary Kline" <kli...@onid.orst.edu>

Hi Dark,
Yep, after you greet warriors and read the information they provide they do vanish. I always thought of it as just passing them by along the road or somesuch. As for the odometer, that's easy enough for me to explain. It keeps track of the number of consecutive legions you've gone in a certain direction. (E.G. 7n means you've gone 7 straight north. For some reason, it starts counting at 0.) You'll notice that if you use the repeat command to turn on more rapid movement it'll increase in leaps of ten, which is useful if a bit dangerous at times. Also keep in mind that if you get into wilderness areas, denoted by "wild" on one of the status lines next to your injurry statistic, I think, you won't be able to keep a straight line of travel without a navaid. Just be careful.
Enjoy,
Zack.

Hi Zac.

thanks, ---- that seems to work, and seems to be the method for all item handling, eg, filling containers.

If you don't mind one other question, I met a warrior and use thed the hi command to check his/her strength. After checking that however and reading the comment, the warrior just sort of vanished, which was odd.

I just need to sort out how the odometer works so I don't get lost in that landscape lol!

When all of these issues are fixed, i'll write up a fallthrough page for audiogames.net with some tips so that these issues don't come up again.

Hi Dark,
In this case, the problem is one of syntax. When the game says "lay down enough money before you buy" it means literally that. You want to type something like "drop 7 ralls", or whatever, before buying anything. You don't need to worry about making change: the game does that for you automatically, though you do have to type "take 35 ems" or however much you're left with after you're done buying things. As a note, the give command is only useful for the most part in yielding to warriors and giving items or food or whatever to peasants.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Zack.

Hi.

I'm sorry about yet another message on this, but I'm running into another issue I'm afraid.

I can't buy any items.

whenever I type in "buy knife" "buy pack" or whatever (as the commands list suggests), I get the message "lay down enough money first"

However when I try to give the shopkeeper money it just says "out of context?"

Any suggestions?

Beware the Grue!

Dark.
