According to a friend of mine who's a big fan of the game, there is an open source more modern version which basically is the original game with add ons such as the ability to actually buy a new ship as well as just trade in. Sadly though I've never had enough eyeballs to play it myself, ---- games like smugglers and core exiles are about as close as I could get unfortunately. Beware the grue!
