I remember actually hearing someone, a jaws user, pronounce GeoCities as geocities. Even NeoSpeech gets it wrong, which is why I didn't even try to write how she pronounced it--you probably just heard your speech synth slaughter the word.

I aggree milos.
One thing I really hate is how the word router is pronounced.
rout er, ie rout er is prenounced rooter.
So when someone says router I say rooter because the reader has got me to say the rooter. suddenly route is root and I guess this is one of the issue with synth speech.
On that note now I use vocaliser in hal it doesn't happen
route is root but router is actually router so it figures, actual non natural voices are bad and crappy then again vocaliser just may have a good dictionarry. I remember how for ages talks and eloquence used to say vadafon instead of vodaphone untill they updated the synth to say that right.

For someone using the spell checker is really a puzzle, so solving a puzle instead of puzzle is easier... :) Now seriously. There are two things that make this problem. First, for us who don't speak English so well, using a spell checker can really take some time. For example, I write a word that jaws pronounces the same way it pronounces the word that I intend to use. There is write, right, rite, wright, and so on, of which some words even don't exist. Then the spell checker offers the list of other words that don't match the word we want and that's a trouble, so it consumes some time till we find out what the right word is. The other problem is that many people use the synthesizers for their own languages to read even english texts and vice versa. That happens for many reasons that I am not going to talk about now as my message is already long enough. So many of those voices will read the word puzle in the same way as they read the word puzzle, so when one hears it and understand what it means from the context, the person will continue to use it, avoiding the spell checker because of the previous problem. I appologize for so detailed explanation of my opinion on this, but I made it because it could be a very sensitive subject, as some of those who are not native english speakers can be offended which I am certainly not, as it also drives me crazy when someone insistantly writes in a wrong way.
  Best regards!

Why do so many people talk about puzles instead of puzzles? A spell checker or proofreading would quickly and easily cure this.
