I have to agree with phil.

Everything from the pyramids to roman britain and even 16th century houses were torn down so people could knick stone, therefore making all the materials go to waste is a litle unrealistic.

As a possibly interesting gameplay point though, maybe this could be a job for the builder, and the more builders doing demolition, the more material you get back.
