Yes, and I suggest to document that behaviour in a more prominent way.
Writing backups to a (NFS-)shared device doesn't seem to be such a
far-fetched idea. Typically you'd expect that NFS mounts (and symlinks)
are transparent to I/O procedures. If that is note the case due to
technical reasons, at least the resulting error message should give a hint.
