Actually, it is working as intended. The man page clearly states
The file should contain text data, line-based, with single
empty lines separating sections. The lines themselves are
column-based, with the pipe symbol (|) acting as separator.
Nevertheless, as discussed with Petr, I'll add an extra clarification
for the non-mathematicians.
