You should be capable of exporting backups for any disk template in Ganeti
2.14.
Whether you can do it live depends on whether the storage and Ganeti's
handling code support snapshots, and in that sense an LVM overlay could
help. That said, this approach is extremely invasive and we do not plan to
ever implement it ourselves, and whoever would like to do so would have to
write a really good design doc.

We have not tested them, but they are supposed to provide LVM atop shared
storage.
