Got the same issue on Debian Jessie.
ganeti 2.12.4-1+deb8u3
socat 1.7.3.1-1~bpo8+1 (jessie-backports/main)
Could not reproduce using socat 1.7.2.4-2 (jessie/main)
socat changed behavior between version 1.7.2 and 1.7.3. See

Downgrading to socat 1.7.2 fixed both this issue and issue 1173.
