to all the people who want ganglia to run on windows.. that will be a reality with 2.5.8 because of the code cleanup, unicast support (cygwin doesn't do multicast), and rpc/xdr support in cygwin now.

i'm running gmond on my windows 2k box right now... works like a charm with most of the metrics working. neat.

all you need to do to get ganglia 2.5.x running on windows is...

- have a newer version of cygwin that has the sun rpc package available
- set "mcast_channel" to a unicast address since cygwin doesn't support multicast - set "no_setuid" to "on" OR change "setuid" to a real user on the system (since a "nobody" user doesn't exist on windoze boxes.. maybe guest?)

that's all.... telnet to port 8649 to view the pretty XML.

IMPORTANT
are there any developers out there know how to make slick windows packages? i would LOVE it if we added that to ganglia for this release. it should be trivial to do for a person who knows how given that we are only installing three files (gmond.exe gmond.conf and cygwin1.dll). we wouldn't need any bells and whistles (unless of course you wanted to add them :). we would need to have gmond.exe setup to run as a windows service. if i remember, matt rice (are you still out there?) submitted the code to do just that...

onward and upward
-matt
