I've not tried applying your patch; but, by eye, it looks fine.
Apologies if I'm pointing out the obvious, but I don't imagine it'll have much
effect without updating the RRD support within gmetad.

adding this support looks to be fairly straight forward: one needs to
change "GAUGE to "COUNTER" in RRD_create()
