Thanks for all who answered. For future reference - my DNS reverse records were not updated properly and were still showing the old hostname.

restarting gmond will (of course) flush all hostname records that it has. you might take a look at nscd (the name service cache daemon) and see if you are running it...

% ps -ef | grep nscd
% ls /etc/nscd.conf

if it's running, it will cache the names for a while before it updates.
